Newcomers had their sights set on California and Oregon, although, other nations had claimed this land. People began to move west. By the 1840s, many east-to-west routes had been carved. Some of these routes are known as the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, and the Santa Fe Trail. The United States promised that the defined territories would belong to the Native Americans forever. With white settlers still traveling across the plains, they continued to provoke the Native American hostility.
